Bye Bye $15/month
Aug. 31st, 2011 10:31 pmAfter studying my city's proposed new energy rates* (supposedly at www.rates.austinenergy.com/rrresources but that link doesn't seem to work in my preview view), I've decided that all four proposals will be worse for me, but they aren't very different from each other.
*I just looked at the summary report (PDF) on that page.
Typical winter months (575 kwh): will cost us about $10 - 15 more.
Typical summer months (1300 kwh): will cost us about $20 more.
Average** months (925 kwh): will cost us about $10 - 20 more.
**Spring and fall do not have typical months, but they are all in between the winter and summer months, so I just chose the mathematical mean of all the months.
(If my title sucks, I apologize for having been reading too much of the blogs "Bye Bye Buy" and "Bye Bye Pie" lately. At least I don't know a word for $15 that rhymes with Bye, or I might have ended up with "Bye Bye Ides" or something.)
Even with all the asterisks and parentheses, that took me much less time to write than to calculate. And that's only slightly because they don't separate out the energy charge from the fuel/green choice choice, but I figured out that for me, the green choice (wind energy subsidization) is costing me a premium of about $0.023 per kwh and it looks like that would continue to be the case for all four proposals.
