Party Girl

Last night I stayed out partying until midnight. Yes, because I am a party animal and so I can party on school nights.

I got to feel soft sari material. I got to see a beautiful bedroom. I got to hear people's experiences regarding body odors left behind on clothing and hair. (Is it gone when you can't smell it? Or does body heat re-activate it?)

I got to hear about other people's philosophies of house buying. People tend to like their own home even if it is illegal to go to it during heavy rains because every single route is prone to flooding. I learned that people who determine flood plains can make mistakes by misaligning flood maps with street maps and then concluding that if a river is running through your house, you are in a flood plain!

I learned that what looks like tiny lawn chairs for two year olds can be quite comfortable and are used by grown people on trains in India. They fold up so tiny it's easy to bring them anywhere!

Someone has the kind of parents who know so many people that no matter what new activity you are trying, they are bound to know someone who died doing it.

I learned that I like cheese goo from a jar.

I'm sleepy now.

Web site of the day: No Impact Man - a journal about a family trying to live a year without making a net negative impact on the earth. They are phasing in various strategies one by one. For example, they don't use any transportation that requires gas or electricity--just walking, bicycling, stuff like that. And they don't have any trash. I can't imagine how not to have trash. But one example is that they were doing without yogurt because it comes in plastic containers that you then throw away. But finally they got a recipe for yogurt they like, so now they can have yogurt again.

At the end of the year, they will go back to doing some things the way they used to, but they will hang on to some of the things they've tried and liked.

The journal didn't go online until several months after they starting trying things out, so you don't get to find out as much as might think you would, but it's still interesting. And the author can write so it's easy to read, too.
We started one Thursday night at 10:00 PM in the middle of the August, 2006 heat wave. Our sweat-soaked tempers frayed immediately. We argued about who would take our 18-month-old daughter, Isabella, to the babysitter since both our schedules now had to accommodate a lot of walking. We had tense discussions about who would be in charge of picking up Isabella's milk from the only New York dairy farmer who uses reusable glass bottles. We both pretended not to notice the mounting pile of dirty dishes resulting from the dishwasher being out of bounds.

But then Michelle surprised herself by loving her walk to and from the office. It gave her back something she missed since becoming a mom: time alone. With no TV, we found ourselves playing with Isabella more, reading more, talking more and--hurray!--having more, well, you know. Having perennially struggled with finding time for the gym to wrestle off our middle-aged midriffs, a couple of pounds immediately dropped off us both. Who needs a gym when you're riding bikes and refusing lifts in elevators and walking everywhere?
