Injuries

Last weekend, I totally slammed my knee into something, and then I had to rush off somewhere. My knee was quite painful for about three minutes instead of the usual thirty seconds or so. And the whole time I was walking, I was imagining that I was exacerbating the damage and that my knee was swelling bigger and bigger.

When I got home, there was no sign of anything. No pretty colors, no interesting shapes. Normally I would have elevated my leg and maybe iced it a bit, but apparently that wouldn't have made the tiniest bit of difference. Weird.

On the other hand, my left ankle has been hurting the tiniest bit since the ultimate tournament weeks ago, and I have been trying not to walk too much and being careful to not strain it more, etc. And it still feels exactly the same: vulnerable.

It hurts a tiny bit when I first get up, each time I get up throughout the day, but then a couple of steps later it feels fine. Normally I'd expect a strain or a sprain to feel worse as you continue walking on it.

I was starting to wonder if that meant that I'm finally getting the arthritis that runs in my family, which you are supposed to just exercise through, but then my dance teacher says it's the same with his injured ankle.

He recommended stretching it before I start walking on it. This has worked nicely, making it so it doesn't even hurt on the first couple of steps. He also recommends bicycling--getting blood through it without stressing it. That's supposed to be better even than walking or swimming. I haven't tried that yet.
