Geschlossen
Jan. 2nd, 2007 09:55 pmToday I got a paid day off from work all because an ex-President died. Doesn't quite seem fair somehow.
Too bad I didn't find out until I got there. With no shuttle buses running I had extra waiting and extra walking while carrying all my snacks for the week, my gym clothes, and a very large statistics book that didn't quite make it in time for Christmas.
When I got there, someone asked me how to get to room 4 in my building. I don't know. For example, at one end is room 1 and room 7 across the hall from each other, and at the other end is room 8. I asked which room it was. Student Accounting. Oh, I remember where that is. I walk to the sign that points to where it is now that they have done construction, but it's pointing the wrong way. "It's supposed to be pointing this way." The door was locked. I had to say that I didn't know what was going on, but when the offices re-open, at least he'll know where it is.
The other offices also weren't open and my secret code didn't work, as if the office is closed. I went to the student union building because they have information monitors. It was also locked but had an explanatory sign.
By the time I got home, I had done 8,000 steps and was exhausted.
Chikuru and I took the opportunity to meet near my house for our weekly lunch. First we tried Pyramids, a Mediterranean restaurant with good Greek food. Unfortunately it is closed for renovations until December. Apparently there is some sort of time warp there that brings you back at least to November.
So we went to La Palapa instead, my favorite Tex-Mex place.
Then I decided to honor our ex-President with a trip to Thrift Town where I found one of the kinds of jackets I've been seeking for a while. I've wanted a black and white small check jacket to wear with black pants and a white shirt. This one also has a few red lines running through, so I can wear my garnet jewelry, too. It also came with a skirt, that fits, so if I ever need an interview suit that goes with black shoes (my other interview suit goes with brown or tan shoes), I now have one. The whole thing cost $5. I also got some short tan socks for $0.50. I love that place. (I had a coupon for $5 off a purchase of $20 or more, but I can almost never use these coupons.)
Then I went to the gym for a body flow class. The light was off in the exercise room, so I looked for an announcement about whether the class was canceled. I didn't find one. I found a schedule for the month of January, and it assured me that the class was still being offered, in its soothing type-written tones. After changing, the room was still dark, so I went to my favorite weight machine, but it was being used as a towel storage unit, so I found a replacement machine and worked my shoulders in a way that this class doesn't.
I think the instructor was a little later than usual, and I was much earlier than usual, so it was all just an illusion. There was a class after all, and it went fairly well. Afterwards I got to unload the book. I suspected this was the same book given to her by a statistician friend, and I was right. I told her that she must re-gift the book with no guilt at all. The statistician friend had wanted to keep the book for herself, but did manage to pass it on. And now she gets her own! Heh heh.
After a week of not eating much but not doing much (cold), I expected to be at about the same weight, but I'm about a pound lighter. Let's see if I can keep up this progress but in a more healthy way.
(The theme of this entry is "closed," a theme I first remember experiencing in the German-speaking part of Switzerland where we often ran into a "Geschlossen" sign. I like the way this word rolls off my tongue.)
