This morning, the forecast I read was for the same weather as yesterday: foggy in the morning, and warm all day.

They forgot to mention the 25-mile-an-hour winds. Heavy winds means we all started playing zone defense at ultimate frisbee instead of man-on-man. I played "wing." The pessimistic description of this position is that you stay behind the action at all times. If a disc ever does get caught by someone near you, run away.

Unlike other times I've played zone, we had people on the sidelines coaching. This meant I always knew what I was supposed to be doing, and I was almost always doing it. ("Back" means toward the end zone, not toward where you just were.)

Although I was pretty much never near anyone, I noticed that even when the "handler" near me caught the disc, and there was no one at all blocking that person (except me, 20 - 30 feet away), that person nevertheless never threw past me. That person always waited until our "cup" of three guys was in the way again before throwing to the side again. So that's kind of amazing if not spectacular. It may be that I am actually helping rather than just staying out of the way. My teammates did describe the goal of this position as "taking up space."

Two throws came to me today. One I fumbled; the other I caught and threw to someone in the end zone who was just barely able to catch it in bounds.

I read the following thoughts on the face of one of my throwers: "Good, someone's open. Oh, it's someone who can't catch. Let me look around, no I shouldn't look around. The right thing to do is to throw it." Poor guy. That was the one I fumbled, too.

I learned that the person(s) who keep track of the score do it by writing down the names of the last two people to touch the disk during each point. Since my throw was caught in the end zone, my name appeared on the chart. I'm famous! I'm in the record books!

In pain prevention news, I had a spoon of peanut butter before I went out, a handful of nuts near the beginning of the second game, and another handful of nuts at the end of the game. Then I stretched everything I could think of to stretch. Let's see if that works.

The next games are in three weeks, presumably because the next two Saturdays are too close to holidays.
