Closet Clean-up
Oct. 2nd, 2006 08:35 pmToday I cleaned the shelves in my closet.
By "my closet," I mean our closet, the closet in the master bedroom, the largest closet in the house. The fact that a closet that is about three feet deep and nine feet wide has shelves is what I call fabulous design. In addition to the shelf over the clothes rod, which is the full depth of the closet, one end of the closet has shelves from top to bottom. This means it is possible to hang only the tiniest of clothing in that end of the closet, but that's okay.
I store sporting equipment there--rock climbing shoes and harness, roller skates, knee pads and wrist pads, a helmet, and ballroom dance shoes. I store old journals there. And I store office supplies there--paper, notebooks, spirals, pens, folders, and notebook dividers. Plus a few other things.
I got rid of a full trash bag worth of stuff. I can't even tell you what all is in there. A bunch of pens that don't work. A couple of crushed notebooks. A stained purse. Some class papers.
I put all my extra purses and wallets that I like into a shoebox and labelled it. (Who knew? There was no need for me to panic last time I lost my purse and decided in disgust that I would just have to make my own!) I put my climbing gear in another labelled shoe box, right on top of my climbing shoes shoe box. I made room for my lifetime supply of scratch paper (the backs of used paper from work), all of which is in sturdy cardboard boxes that envelopes come in. So now the shelves look neat, and most things are protected from dust. And more importantly, I can find things and I don't have piles of things in front of my closet.
I still can't get to my dresser or my desk very easily, but I can get to my closet, and that is good. Also, some of the stuff that was previously in front of my desk (lifetime supply of scratch paper) is now in my closet, so that's a good sign.
I also have a small bag of things to give away--belts and a purse. And it's labelled, so I don't have to go through it again and try to remember what my plan was.
And I cleaned out and organized the little cardboard drawers in there. Now the top drawer has swim suits and lace shawls. The second drawer has belts. The third has slips. The fourth has pajamas. There are no melty candles.
No-added-sugar update - Well, it's over. I successfully accomplished what I wanted to and didn't even have to have the one or two cheats I was going to allow myself. Nothing about the experience makes me want to stay off sugar forever (until I get diabetic or prediabetic). I didn't feel better or worse (except for the lightheadedness and sleepiness that one day). Any weird things I felt may or may not have been attributable to the reduced intake of sugar.
Or chocolate. I went a whole week without chocolate, too, which I think I do only rarely, especially now that dark chocolate is supposedly good for you.
Today I met some friends at the Upper Crust Bakery and had a cookie and half a ham-and-cheese brioche. If we had gone yesterday as was originally planned, it would have been no problem to avoid sugar. Later I had a hot chocolate and two squares of dark chocolate. However, it doesn't appear that I feel I have to make up for having been deprived with a sugar fiesta or anything, so that's cool.
It was fun seeing some of my friends who I haven't seen for a while. I saw one who had wanted to see my checkbook register in person. Now I want to show her one of my older checkbooks. I saw one who has a 90-minute commute, is rehearsing for a dance show that starts next weekend, and is trying to find time to do some decorating (painting, etc.) And my sister told me that she is having a baby.
