Bakery Fun

I invited a bunch of people to join me today at Upper Crust Bakery at 10:30 this morning. These people all fell under the loose descriptor, "single." One is coupled up, though technically single. Two are technically married, but their spouses are currently in other countries. The other three are single by all definitions, as far as I know. I don't know why I picked this theme; I just don't want people to be lonely.

And they all came. Even though I didn't think to invite one of them myself. And even though one person said I am the only person she knows who schedules social events for the morning. But that's when the ham-and-cheese brioches come out, so it was really out of my hands.

I learned that job hunting sucks. Oh, wait! I already knew that. And I learned that it's not so easy to figure out what you want to do with your career. Oh, wait! I already knew that, too. I tried to spew some of my relevant philosophies for this situation:

Just because, compared to everyone you see, you are the worst person at doing what you're trying to do, doesn't necessarily mean you're not that good. The people who are worse than you aren't even out there trying, so you don't see them. I decided this when I was at a park trying to do a pull-up and I could only do a total of less than one. Now in this case, I clearly wasn't that good. But I decided that there might be plenty of people even worse than me, but they were all at home watching TV.

Another philosophy: if you find a job you think you would like and be good at, you should apply for it (if you have spare time) even if you don't technically have all the qualifications the employer claims to want, because the employer might be mistaken. My regular readers may recall that I learned this recently with the job opening in my office.

And just because you suck at learning something that you really want to know doesn't mean you should give up. You might be a slow learner--I love that term because it shows that you can learn, even though it might take you longer.

I got to see the "cereal killer" t-shirt, with the spoon ("because spoons are dull, so they hurt more.")

I learned that although technically neither Lamar nor Burnet are good bike-riding roads, Lamar is much safer than Burnet.

I learned that several people are interested in starting to go to the Veloway again, even though it is the middle of August. This is a park with a three-mile long asphalt trail that is as wide as a road. You are only allowed on this trail if you are on a bicycle or skates. Our tradition is to go on Sunday mornings not quite early enough for it to be cool, but not quite late enough for you not to have to set your alarm. (That's the compromise time.)

Most people were not quite ready to go tomorrow, but they were up for next week. I may try going again, but not next week when I will be in Milwaukee.

I also learned that ham and cheese taste really good stuffed into a brioche, which is a buttery, eggy, melt-in-your-mouth kind of bread. Oh, wait! I already knew that. And it's true even if you think you're a bit tired of ham, like after a trip to Belgium with someone who's semi-kosher and someone who hates ham, but they keep accidentally ordering things that are full of ham, like, oh, spaghetti, and so you have to eat it for them.
