Financial Calculations
Jun. 10th, 2006 09:25 pmToday I went to the (first annual?) mini garage sale put on by the Settlement Home. They have a huge, wonderful garage sale each fall in an auditorium, but this one was right on their own property.
I'm afraid I didn't support them very much. There was no entry fee, and I bought only one thing: a large piece of white felt with a small shape cut out of it. Price? Five cents. This will be good for making quilted potholders. I may have a lifetime supply of felt for quilted potholders, in fact, because how many do you really need?
Today I also calculated how much my vacation cost me. I'm used to thinking of vacation costs ranging between driving/camping vacations at $500 and European vacations with friends hosting me for $2000. This one was in between. This one-week domestic flying, car-renting, hotel-staying vacation cost about $1500.
If you are interested in the breakdown (rounded numbers), I spent $350 on the plane ticket, $600 for hotels, $350 for car rental and gas (plus a little more for tolls). I also spent about $100 on souvenirs (shirts, jacket, CD, measuring cup, and post cards). (I had already bought my camera and computer before, and LiveJournal is free.) And I really think I spent less than $100 on food, partly due to being subsidized by Robin and llcoolvad (thank-you again!), partly due to breakfast prices being included in hotel tabs, partly due to eating a lot from grocery stores, and partly due to not eating that much. And I spent a bit on admissions to museums and factory tours.
I did better than expected with food. I did worse than expected with hotels (ranging from $54 to $108 per night--the median was $75--instead of the $45 - $55 I was guessing). I bought lots more "souvenirs" than I expected, but that was all awesome.
I also recalculated my savings and net worth and stuff today (as of the first of the month). It's all worse than last month, but not that bad considering that I paid for all but the plane ticket of my vacation plus a car repair bill plus a flood insurance premium.
