Path of Blackness
Feb. 3rd, 2006 06:53 pmI walked into the office and saw that someone had decided to tape an electrical cord down the middle of the rug. No, that wasn't black electrical tape, that was black crepe paper. Leading somewhere, through the labyrinth of cubicles.
That's when I remembered the plan. I already knew where it led, but I was curious as to what I would find there. I found black balloons. I found the large black pin with the white writing proclaiming "I'm not dead." And happy birthday flags, strung across a co-worker's cubicle.
And tres leches cake. And then a chocolate football-shaped cake made its way to the cake table. "I had to get the Steelers; it was the only chocolate one." And chocolate covered chocolate donuts. And homemade pineapple upside-down cake. There are worse ways to turn forty.
**
If you don't know what tres leches cake is, well neither do I. I know it's pronounced "trace LAY-chase." I know it means "three milks" in Spanish. It's an understatement to call it a very moist yellow cake. It borders on soggy. I can't comprehend how you'd make it.
Web research indicates that you mix sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and whole milk or cream together, then pour it over the cake until it can't soak up any more, then frost the cake.
