Fast food calorie game
Jan. 20th, 2006 10:21 pmToday I looked up calorie amounts for various fast food meals I like to have regularly when I eat out at work. Do you want to guess the winner? Here are the choices, roughly in order of preference or in order of how often I actually get it lately. (Yes, I know. Fast food is not healthy.)
* Taco Bell - 1/2 pound beef combo burrito
* Local pizza joint - 1 large slice of sausage pizza
* McDonald's - double cheeseburger and small fries
* Taco Bell - soft taco (beef) and pintos-and-cheese (The beans come with a broken crispy taco shell. I transfer the soft taco contents into the crispy shell. Then I transfer some of the beans and sauce into the soft-taco tortilla to make a burrito. Then I eat the rest of the beans that wouldn't fit. Cheap and filling!)
* Wendy's - junior cheeseburger deluxe and small fries
* McDonald's - double cheeseburger and fruit/yogurt parfait
I didn't try to make calculations for the barbecue place or the Chinese food place. (The portion sizes are so large that even if I eat only half, that's still got to be a lot of calories.)
I can't calculate the pizza directly, so I looked up the nutrition information for Pizza Hut and assumed that my slice might be as much as 50% bigger. I expected the numbers for all these choices to be about the same, but they weren't. So, are you ready for the winners? There was sort of a tie. Of the items I could find information for, the winner is the soft taco/refried beans meal (410 calories). And the pizza estimate came out just about the same. (One large slice--14 inches--of hand-tossed style sausage pizza from Pizza Hut is 270 calories + 50% = 405 calories.)
Normally when several things tempt me, I use price to decide (obviously!), but I think for a while (unless I'm eating socially) I'll use calorie count instead.
