Family Communication Methods
Jul. 30th, 2005 09:17 pmRobin and I watched the movie "Eat Drink Man Woman" after Robin assured me that no cannibalism of any kind was involved.
In one scene a character was complaining about the loud music from a neighboring house. Her sister said that their own family communicated through food, so why can't another communicate through karaoke? In one of the extras on the DVD, Ang Lee said that difficulty in communicating was one of the themes of the movie. He said the family in the movie had trouble partly because the father and daughters were opposite genders (the mother had died years earlier). However, the sisters didn't communicate with each other very well, either.
The real star of the movie is the cooking. You get to see an expert chef (actually, Ang Lee said it was four chefs) prepare the most amazing over-the-top meals. So afterwards, Robin was in the mood for something exquisite. We went to Thai Village.
Then at the restaurant, we overheard someone at the next table explaining that her family communicated via pamphlets. Periodically, one of the kids would find, at his or her place at the dinner table, a pamphlet entitled "Your Teen and Drugs" or "Your Teen and Teenage Pregnancy." Haven't been on a date in a while? Don't be surprised to find "Your Teen and Homosexuality." (I'm probably remembering some of these titles wrong, but you get the picture.)
