Toenail polish

Waiting outside Moonshine restaurant for it to open last Sunday (back when it was still summer), I noticed a lot of people wearing sandals. And almost every single one of them was also wearing toenail polish.

The two little girls weren't. The one man wasn't. There were three others who at first looked like they didn't have toenail polish, but on closer inspection, one had pearlescent polish, and one had shiny clear polish. And at least 25 other people had toenail polish.

Mostly it was shades of red and pink. One person had dark blue or maybe black. Most didn't also wear fingernail polish.

So apparently it's unbelievably uncool to wear sandals or flip-flops without toenail polish if you are a grown woman, even in Austin, one of the casual capitols of America. So sad. That stuff is smelly while drying, poisonous, and takes forever to dry.

You could always fake it with Sharpie markers!

Also smelly, but it dries quicker.

Yeah, I guess I'm ok with being unbelievably uncool! I never wear nail polish. I don't like the way it feels on my fingernails, so it wouldn't occur to me to put it on my toenails.

I never thought about how it feels on fingernails. I'm feeling my fingernails right now, and they do feel nice and smooth and not at all plasticky. Here I've gone all this time not properly appreciating that!

I'm uncool too! And I love it! There was a time in my life when I wore toenail polish, deep red, I think, but I hate it now. It's disgusting, messy, and discolors the nails (which I guess isn't a problem if they're always painted!) - plus, I swear I can *feel* the weight of the polish on my nails. It's the same with lotion; I don't wear lotion except on my hands sometimes, because I wash them so much, working at the hospital. I feel my skin can't breathe with lotion on (better with higher quality lotion which is absorbed more readily, but still, I can feel it on my skin and it makes me feel hot! And not in the good way :-/)

I think it's pretty except when it starts chipping away.

I've never felt claustrophobic about lotion. But then I don't wear it much except in winter. Not because it keeps me warm, but because sometimes my skin gets flaky in winter unless I put lotion on it.

You probably don't like lip balm, either, right?

Lipstick is the one cosmetic I really do like, but I use a scary kind (ColorStay, Revlon) which just stays on but doesn't smear off. I don't wear other makeup (if anything else, sometimes eyeliner) but a little lipstick goes a long way to making me feel less like a zombie - especially when I am wearing scrubs...

So, yeah, I don't like the glossy or slimy lip balm. Sometimes I do put some on at night before I go to sleep, though!
