Cayamo Cruise: Day 7

Day 7 was our last full day at sea. We went to yet another lecture. We ended our suspense about Joe Purdy. We also ended my suspense about "Loud and Rich." We knew it was a fun name for Loudon Wainwright III and Richard Thompson, but I couldn't imagine what the latter could possibly see in the former. Then some new faces: Antje Duvekot and Sarah Buxton. Then another dose of John Hiatt.

Ask Sixthman

Sixthman is the name of the company that puts together these cruises as well as other music cruises. They promised to give us "a behind the scenes glimpse of Cayamo." I couldn't imagine that learning the details of event planning would be at all intersting, but you never know, and it's not like there was anything else going on at 11 am anyway.

Where did the name Cayamo come from? Cay - an island. Amo - love. (I though "Cay" was spelled "Key." Of course if they had spelled it "Keyamo, I still would have mispronounced it, just in a different way.)

Why don't they record the "artists"? (The musicians were always called "artists" on this cruise.) Because the artists are more relaxed when there's no "record" light, so they don't start over-thinking things. Also, power hasn't been reliable in the past.

How do they deal with lines and tickets? Their dream is no tickets, but they can't do it yet, even though they like to put two headliners against each other. They hate lines more than they hate tickets. (Supporting data: One time we came early to get in line, and instead they handed us tickets and told us to go have fun. So we did.)

Why not do an onshore show? That would cost at least an additional $50,000.

What are their dream guests? James Taylor, Paul Simon, Ryan Adams, Avid(?) Brothers.

How many acts this year? Forty. (And here you thought I was going overboard telling you about all of them. I'm probably leaving out half of them!)

Why not do a land-based thing instead of just cruises? (ooh! This was a question I had.) They tried one, but skiing didn't work out. They are checking out exclusive places in Mexico, though. Having no internet helps.

Why pick that week? Changing the week can change the price (per person) 100 - 200 dollars.

Where can we learn more about these artists? At cayamo.com/artists.

On cruise profits: One-third of all cruise ship profit is the extras--alcohol, gift shop, gambling. They implied that we don't do as much of these things as regular cruise-goers. On the other hand, we eat less than people on other cruises. (I think I ate as much as I did on my other cruise. And drank, gambled and shopped the same amount--zero. Although I did look closely at the band t-shirts and CDs, just in case.)

Joe Purdy

Joe Purdy started out saying, "I'm going to try out some other people's banter." I get the idea that the other musicians kept telling him to work on his banter. He said a few things ending with, "This song is for my wife." "Actually, I don't have a wife." And other amusing things after that.

I didn't catch the titles of many of the songs he did. So I'll just tell you what he said about some of them.

"Here's a sad and lonesome song."

"For my next number, I'd like to play a song."

"Sometimes I like to hide my feelings in Great Depression ballads."

"This song I wrote slightly out of tune, so I'm just gong to play it that way."

Some lyrics I caught from one song: "When you grow up, don't you hate your mom and dad. It ain't easy to be a pioneer when the land that you move to is dry."

Another stab at banter: "Any baseball fans here? [Yes.] Good for you. No, I like it, too. I don't know what's wrong with me." Then he played a song about an ex-baseball player.

Then Sarah Dugas, Levi Levinson, and Sebastian joined him.

Levi coached him on the banter. "Just be yourself."

About Sebastian: "It's a rare thing to find someone who holds an entire song together when he hasn't ever heard it."

Possible title: "If I Had You, I Would be Gold."

Then a song about a cold-blooded killer. "This song I wrote made my mother very upset." Called "Straightjacket," it's about a guy who killed someone for calling his crush names.

One last lyric, "I'm going fishing in the Rio Grande. I'm gonna catch me some quiet today."

He was quite tickled that he had his own special guests and that they were the most awesome pick-up band ever. It was quite fun watching this show and seeing how much better it went than the other show we saw of him.

Loud and Rich

As I said before, I had no interest it watching Loudon Wainwright III again, but he was playing with Richard Thompson. What? The most talented guy playing with the least talented guy on the ship (probable exaggeration)? What does Richard see in Loudon?

I still don't know.

Maybe it's like ballroom dancing - if you're good enough, you can enjoy following people at any level.

Loudon makes a face.

Loudon uses a cheat sheet.

Loudon retunes his guitar. Again. Richard stalls as long as he can and eventually gives him an electronic tuning device.

"'Just do a Marty Robbins medley while I tune.' You ask him things like that, as a joke, and then he does it." - I think you know which one of them said this.

Robin says he's charming. He must be.

I did like the song "Flycatcher."

Antje Duvekot

My notes aren't so hot at this point. Antje played and sang for a while, then one by one, she invited three other folks to join her. One was Natalie Zuckerman (from Winterbloom). One was named Ann.

"Juliette" is about a friend of hers from high school.

"The Gypsy Life" with Meg Hutchinsons - she said this song suits this whole cruise environment.

She had polyps removed from her sinuses and was warned that it might change her voice. "I was hoping for Otis Redding."

"Jerusalem: It's so obvious. It's the extremists on both sides that are going to hell. And they're going to be surprised to see each other there."

She wrote a song about her landlord. The landlady was obnoxious and repetitive, but the landlord didn't talk much. Did he just give up? She said her job is to give a voice to the voiceless. So, she wrote a song from his viewpoint: "[When You're Asleep is] When I Love You Best."

She sang someone else's song with the lyric "All they will call you will be deportee."

She sang "Four Stitches," which started off being about her dad, but that was too hard to write, so it ended up being about another guy.

They sang Richard Thompson's "Beeswing," which is great because a lot of people love that song and I get the idea that he's tired of singing it. But she's still learning it and had a few mess-ups--one so bad that she re-did that lyric (so it would make sense) before continuing. (Note: the title is pronounced "Bee's Wing," not "Bee Swing.")

Next she did a road trip song. She said that she once left a box w/100 of her CDs behind and drove 900 miles before realizing it. A guy found them, though. The box had been opened, but no one had taken any of her CDs. This made her sad.

Sarah Buxton

Sarah moves around a lot.

Jerry Hanson, on your right, is a "finger drummer."

"Moonshine"

"Crazy Talk"

"I Can't Help My Heart"

"Here's to dreams you thought would never come true. Then they do."

"Please Don't Push Me Away"

"I Know Better Now Than Giving It All Away."

"Stupid" (The real title of "You Stupid Boy.")

"Fade" - about saying let's just get old and let everything go and just always remember each other like this.

"Every Time I Fall in Love"

John Hiatt

"You know, we all get into this racket 'cause we're egomaniacs with inferiority complexes."

He told us that it was Ed's 30th wedding anniversary. He ran into Ed in the elevator and had totally forgotten that Ed had requested a song. "My first thought is to lie. 'oh, uh, it was too hard.'" Then he announced to all of us, "Ed, I'm coming clean with you. It wasn't too hard. I frickin' learned it this afternoon."

(Not that I remember the song.)

"Well, you get so relaxed on these things, well, I've got to do a show? How do you do those?"

**

We still could have easily gotten to Levi Lowrey's show--he looked interesting and I wanted to try it. But I just couldn't stay awake.
